This is also known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI); it can contribute to the development of spider veins. When the valves in the deep veins fail to function properly, blood flows backward (venous reflux), increasing pressure in the venous system. This elevated pressure, called venous hypertension, can extend into smaller superficial veins, causing them to dilate and form visible spider veins or telangiectasias.
Addressing the underlying venous insufficiency will help manage both spider veins and potential complications, such as varicose veins.
